Ku-ring-gai Council voted unanimously on 10 August to preserve the approval while it considers longer-term options for performing-arts infrastructure in Gordon Ward. The works are intended to keep the approval usable, but do not commit Council to reviving Marian Street Theatre.
The condition is firm. Council will begin the initial site activities immediately. Internal demolition required to preserve DA 0144/20 will start only if the Save Marian Street Public Fund transfers the full $100,000 to Council accounts by 12 August or earlier. If the full amount is not received, the saving works will not commence.
The fund says it has raised enough to assist with the estimated preservation cost. The resolution records that claim, but does not confirm that the money had reached Council accounts when councillors voted.
Council also recorded community interest in applying for Round 2 of the Federal Thriving Suburbs grants program. Preserving DA 0144/20 is a prerequisite for that application, and other State or Federal funding opportunities could arise from preserving the approval.
Preservation alone will not reopen or rebuild the theatre. Council will receive three or more options for funding and delivering performing-arts infrastructure in Gordon Ward, including Marian Street Theatre, Gordon Civic Hub, or both.
That report will follow the update to the Community and Cultural Facilities Strategy and the outcome of Thriving Suburbs Round 2, both expected in mid-2027. Related planning processes include the Killara Public Domain Plan.
Future funding considerations include asset sales in Gordon Ward and other funding avenues. A rates levy linked to the St Ives basketball courts is also to be considered after the loan is fully paid. No new levy or asset sale was adopted at the meeting.
