Marian Street Theatre demolition hinges on $100,000 by Wednesday

Marian Street Theatre’s preservation works can begin immediately, but physical internal demolition in Killara is conditional on $100,000 reaching Ku-ring-gai Council by Wednesday 12 August.
The council unanimously approved preparatory and site-establishment activities at the theatre and backed steps to preserve development approval DA 0144/20. Internal demolition required to preserve the approval will proceed only if the full $100,000 is transferred to council accounts from the Save Marian Street Public Fund by 12 August. If the money is not received, the saving works will not start.
The Save Marian Street Public Fund says it has raised enough to assist with the estimated preservation cost. Council has not committed to reviving Marian Street Theatre, with the resolution noting the substantial funding required for the project.
Councillors also noted community interest in applying for Round 2 of the Federal Thriving Suburbs grants program. Preservation of DA 0144/20 is a prerequisite for that application. State and federal funding opportunities linked to preserving the approval were also noted.
The resolution replaced council’s 16 June position, which ruled out further spending solely to preserve or extend the development approval. The amended motion was moved by Councillors S Ngai and A Taylor and carried unanimously.
Related planning processes include the Community and Cultural Facilities Strategy update and the Killara Public Domain Plan. Council will later receive at least three options for funding and delivering performing-arts infrastructure in Gordon Ward, including Marian Street Theatre, Gordon Civic Hub or both.
That report will follow the strategy update and the expected outcome of Thriving Suburbs Round 2, both expected in mid-2027. Possible funding sources include asset sales in Gordon Ward and other avenues. A rates levy for the St Ives basketball courts is also to be considered after the associated loan is fully paid. No new levy or asset sale was approved at this meeting.
