Gordon Ward performing-arts choices delayed until mid-2027 reports
Ku-ring-gai Council will compare at least three ways to fund and deliver performing-arts infrastructure in Gordon Ward after strategy and grant outcomes expected in mid-2027.
Residents in Gordon Ward will be given at least three funding and delivery choices for performing-arts infrastructure, including Marian Street Theatre, Gordon Civic Hub, or both, after two reports expected in mid-2027.
Ku-ring-gai Council unanimously agreed to defer the comparison until the Community and Cultural Facilities Strategy update and the outcome of Round 2 of the Federal Thriving Suburbs grants program are known. The resolution did not select a preferred facility or commit to reviving Marian Street Theatre.
Council will begin preparatory and site-establishment activities at Marian Street Theatre immediately. Physical internal demolition needed to preserve development approval DA 0144/20 is conditional on $100,000 being transferred to Council accounts from the Save Marian Street Public Fund by Wednesday, 12 August 2026, or earlier.
The council recorded that the Save Marian Street Public Fund says it has raised enough to assist with the estimated preservation cost. It did not confirm that the money had been received. Preserving DA 0144/20 is a prerequisite for applying to the Federal Thriving Suburbs Round 2 program, while other state and federal funding opportunities may also arise.
The later report will compare infrastructure and funding choices for Gordon Ward. Potential funding sources include asset sales in the ward and other avenues. Council did not approve an asset sale, a new rates levy or capital funding for a completed performing-arts facility.
The Community and Cultural Facilities Strategy update will also guide future decisions about community space in Killara. Council identified the Killara Public Domain Plan as another related planning process.
Until the strategy and grant outcomes are available, the $100,000 preservation work remains a conditional step. It does not determine which facility will be delivered or how a future project will be funded.
