Killara community-space plans tied to 2026/27 strategy as theatre works face $100,000 condition
Killara’s future community facilities will be considered through a 2026/27 strategy update, while $100,000 must reach council accounts before internal demolition work can preserve Marian Street Theatre’s approval.
Killara residents will have future community-space decisions considered through Ku-ring-gai Council’s Community and Cultural Facilities Strategy update, starting in 2026/27, while work to preserve Marian Street Theatre’s development approval is tied to a $100,000 funding condition.
Councillors voted unanimously on 10 August to begin preparatory and site-establishment activities at Marian Street Theatre immediately. Physical internal demolition works required to preserve DA 0144/20 will proceed only if $100,000 is transferred to council accounts from the Save Marian Street Public Fund by 12 August or earlier. If the full amount is not received by then, the saving works will not start.
The Save Marian Street Public Fund says it has raised enough to assist with the estimated preservation cost. The council resolution does not commit Ku-ring-gai to reviving the theatre, citing limited funding options for the substantial costs involved.
The strategy update will sit alongside the Killara Public Domain Plan, which is also in progress. It will inform later decisions about whether and how community facilities are provided in Killara.
Council will also receive at least three options for funding and delivering performing-arts infrastructure in Gordon Ward. The options may include Marian Street Theatre, Gordon Civic Hub, or both. A report will wait for the Community and Cultural Facilities Strategy update and the outcome of Round 2 of the Federal Thriving Suburbs grants program, both expected in mid-2027.
The council noted community interest in the Thriving Suburbs program, which requires preservation of DA 0144/20 as a prerequisite, along with potential State and Federal funding opportunities.
Possible future funding avenues include asset sales in Gordon Ward and other sources. The St Ives basketball courts rates levy was also identified for consideration after its loan is fully paid. No new rates levy or asset sale was adopted at the meeting.
