Gordons Bay rock platform to be assessed for safer water entry

Swimmers, snorkellers, kayakers, surfers and scuba divers using Gordons Bay will be the focus of a feasibility investigation into levelling about 12 metres of uneven rock beyond the Victory Street footpath.

Randwick City Council resolved on 28 July to examine whether the rock platform can be smoothed and levelled at the same width as the existing path, or wider where practicable. The water entry is exposed to southerly swells, particularly at low and mid tides, and has been used by the community for more than 20 years.

The investigation follows concerns from the Gordons Bay SCUBA Diving Club about the uneven platform and the safety and accessibility of the entry and exit point. Council will work with the club, the Clovelly Crusties, Clovelly Surf Life Saving Club and members of the public while developing the proposal.

No construction has been approved. Council must first identify any planning, environmental, heritage and landowner approvals required from Crown Lands and other relevant authorities.

The proposed assessment will cover the project’s scope, preliminary costings, environmental and safety considerations, consultation requirements and funding options. Council will investigate whether the work can be funded through existing or future capital works budgets. If funding is unavailable, it will support the diving club in seeking an appropriate NSW Government grant.

Council will also begin discussions with Crown Lands and other relevant authorities to establish a pathway for the required approvals. Where practicable, it will give the diving club preliminary approval information and supporting documents to reduce the risk of missing a future NSW Government grant opportunity.

A report must return to Council before any physical work proceeds. The resolution does not specify when that report is due or provide an estimated construction cost.
