Marrickville streets to close for festival and up to 11 Henson Park AFLW matches
Marrickville Road, Central Lane and three streets around Henson Park will be closed on event days, with affected residents and businesses receiving at least seven days’ notice for match closures.
Marrickville residents, businesses and road users will face temporary closures on multiple streets for the Marrickville Music Festival on 11 October 2026 and up to 11 AFLW matches at Henson Park.
The festival closures will affect Marrickville Road, Central Lane, Seymour Lane and Garners Lane, plus short sections of Silver Street, Garners Avenue, Gladstone Street and Frampton Avenue. Road closures, event setup and pack-down will run from early morning until late evening.
For the AFLW matches, Woodland Street, Holmesdale Street and Centennial Street in Marrickville will close on listed dates from 13 September through November 2026. The approval is subject to a Road Occupancy Licence, Transport for New South Wales concurrence and notification requirements.
Residents and businesses affected by each AFLW closure must receive written notice at least seven days beforehand. Event organisers must make reasonable provision for access and install closure signage. The Centennial Street closure also requires Transport for New South Wales concurrence before the relevant matches.
The Local Transport Forum supported both event applications alongside other traffic measures in the area. It approved a 9.6-metre No Parking zone opposite 217 and 219 Trafalgar Street to improve access to garages. Parking will be removed from the designated section, while other proposed restrictions will only be considered if further requests are received and supported through community consultation.
On Norton Street, between Hugh Street and Miller Avenue, the Forum approved a painted chicane and approved in principle a landscaped kerb blister on the northern kerb, broadly following the temporary painted island. Transit Systems can refer further concerns about bus access to Council officers.
AFL NSW/ACT is responsible for obtaining the required concurrence for the Centennial Street closure. The event approvals are also subject to standard Council conditions, including the required road-occupancy and notification steps.
The closures will bring detours and changed local access around Marrickville Road, Central Lane and Henson Park on event days. EV charging arrangements at 39 Moore Street and near Ilka Street park, opposite 1 Ilka Street, remain subject to confirmation, including whether charging spaces can be used for general parking when not charging.
