Five Inner West EV charging sites backed, but idle parking rules remain unanswered
The Local Transport Forum supported 8am to 10pm EV charging restrictions at sites including 39 Moore Street, Leichhardt. Council still has to confirm how the spaces can be used when cars are not charging.
Drivers using five proposed electric vehicle charging sites in the Inner West will face 8am to 10pm no-parking restrictions, after the Local Transport Forum supported the locations, including War Memorial Park at 39 Moore Street, Leichhardt.
The proposed signs would read “No Parking 8am-10pm EV excepted while charging”. The other sites are Hinsby Park Playground, 56 Robert Street, Balmain, 1 Goodsell Street, St Peters, and Camdenville Park opposite 74 May Street, St Peters.
Council’s current charger rollout will be installed by EVX under the Transport and Infrastructure State Environmental Planning Policy, which allows the chargers to be installed without a development application. Council has partnered with several kerbside charging providers and received State Government funding for the program.
Questions about parking and the provider’s commercial arrangement remain unanswered. The representative for the Member for Summer Hill asked whether the charging spaces could be used for general parking when they were not being used for charging, and whether there was a specific commercial or revenue arrangement.
A Council officer said the details would be confirmed. After the meeting, Council advised that another EV charging space is adjacent to the park opposite 1 Ilka Street.
Council also advised that there is currently no cost to the provider until capital costs are recouped. Other details of the commercial arrangement, including the general use of charging spaces when they are idle, still have to be confirmed.
The Forum’s support covers the five proposed sites and their signage and line marking plans. At 39 Moore Street, the electrical pole is in Catherine Street. The approved locations will reduce the availability of ordinary parking during the stated hours where the charging spaces are installed, while reserving them for electric vehicles that are charging.
