Topics

  • Marrickville Music Festival road closures approved for October event
Council-backed closures will shut Marrickville Road and surrounding lanes for the 11 October festival, with detours and bus diversions expected.
Residents, businesses, drivers and public transport users will face access and travel changes across central Marrickville.
  • Up to 11 AFLW matches to bring recurring road closures around Henson Park
Roads around Henson Park are set to close on multiple match days from September through November, subject to approvals and resident notification.
The recurring closures will affect local access, pedestrian routes, parking and traffic around Henson Park.
  • New Norton Street chicane approved to change corner turning movements
A painted chicane and possible landscaped kerb blister will reshape vehicle movements between Hugh Street and Miller Avenue.
The treatment is designed to improve corner safety, but bus operators have flagged a potential access issue that could affect services.

Decisions

  • No-parking zone on Trafalgar Street
The Forum supported a 9.6-metre No Parking zone opposite 217 and 219 Trafalgar Street to address access problems for affected garages. Other proposed No Parking zones will only be considered if further requests are received and supported by community consultation.
Residents and garage users near the affected section should gain improved access, while parking will be removed from the designated zone.
  • Norton Street traffic treatments
The Forum approved a painted chicane on Norton Street between Hugh Street and Miller Avenue and approved in principle a landscaped kerb blister on the northern kerb, broadly following the temporary painted island. Further concerns about bus access may be referred to Council officers.
The treatment is intended to improve turning movements and discourage vehicles from cutting across the corner, but may affect bus movements and parking or road space.
  • Marrickville Music Festival road closures
The Forum supported temporary full road closures for Marrickville Music Festival on Sunday 11 October 2026, subject to standard Council conditions. Closures will affect Marrickville Road, Central Lane, Seymour Lane, Garners Lane and short sections of Silver Street, Garners Avenue, Gladstone Street and Frampton Avenue.
Residents, businesses, pedestrians and bus users should expect detours, diversions, access changes and event-related activity from early morning until late evening.
  • AFLW match road closures at Henson Park
The Forum supported temporary full closures of Woodland Street, Holmesdale Street and Centennial Street for up to 11 AFLW matches at Henson Park, on listed dates from 13 September through November 2026. Approval is subject to a Road Occupancy Licence, Transport for NSW concurrence and notification requirements.
The closures will change local access and traffic arrangements around Henson Park on match days, with residents and businesses to receive written notice at least seven days beforehand.
  • Electric vehicle charging information
The Forum agreed with the recommendation concerning an EV charging location at 39 Moore Street. Council later advised that another EV charging space is adjacent to the park opposite 1 Ilka Street, and that there is currently no cost to the provider until capital costs are recouped. Questions about general parking use and the commercial arrangement were to be confirmed.
The information may affect future EV charging access and the availability of nearby public parking spaces.

Discussion

  • Event-related traffic management
Two separate event applications were supported: Marrickville Music Festival closures on 11 October 2026 and recurring closures around Henson Park for up to 11 AFLW matches.
Local travel times, bus routes, parking and property access may be affected on event days.
  • Bus access and corner safety on Norton Street
The proposed painted and future landscaped treatments are intended to improve vehicle turning while avoiding excessive road narrowing. Transit Systems may raise further concerns about bus access.
Changes could improve safety and turning behaviour but may require adjustments to bus movements, including school services.
  • Parking access near Trafalgar Street garages
The Forum rejected a partial restriction as insufficient and supported a full 9.6-metre No Parking zone opposite 217 and 219 Trafalgar Street.
Garage access was prioritised over retaining parking in the affected section.

Impacts

  • Temporary event closures will require detours and may cause local traffic disruption around Marrickville Road, Central Lane and Henson Park.
  • Residents and businesses affected by AFLW closures must be notified at least seven days before each closure, with reasonable provision for access required.
  • The Trafalgar Street restriction will remove parking from the designated 9.6-metre zone but is intended to improve access to garages.
  • The Norton Street treatments may affect turning movements, road space and bus access, with further concerns able to be considered by Council officers.
  • EV charging arrangements and whether charging spaces can be used for general parking when not charging remain subject to confirmation.

Places

  • 39 Moore Street (street address)
    EV charging location under consideration.
  • Ilka Street park, opposite 1 Ilka Street (park and EV charging location)
An existing EV charging space is adjacent to the park.
  • Trafalgar Street, opposite 217 and 219 (road)
Location of the supported 9.6-metre No Parking zone.
  • Norton Street between Hugh Street and Miller Avenue (road corridor)
Location of the approved painted chicane and proposed landscaped kerb blister.
  • Marrickville Road and Central Lane (roads)
Main temporary closures for Marrickville Music Festival.
  • Henson Park (sports facility)
Venue for up to 11 AFLW matches requiring surrounding road closures.
  • Woodland Street, Holmesdale Street and Centennial Street, Marrickville (roads)
Roads proposed for AFLW match-day closures.
  • Marrickville (suburb)
Area affected by the festival, AFLW matches and associated traffic changes.

Next

  • Council officers to confirm details about the EV charging location, general parking use and commercial or revenue arrangements.
After the meeting; timing not specified.
  • Council officers to consider any further Transit Systems concerns about Norton Street bus access.
    If concerns are submitted.
  • Event organisers to obtain required road occupancy approvals, notify affected residents and businesses, and install closure signage.
At least seven days before each relevant closure.
  • AFL NSW/ACT to obtain Transport for NSW concurrence for the Centennial Street closure.
Before the relevant AFLW road closures.
