The City of Wanneroo’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Advisory Committee backed Option 3 for future resource recovery event delivery at its 11 May meeting in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre, 23 Dundebar Road, Wanneroo. The meeting started at 6pm.

The committee gave feedback on the resource recovery event options and supported Option 3 as the recommended implementation choice. The minutes do not spell out the option details, but record that it is the preferred approach for future waste reduction and recycling education or community engagement events.

Administration told the committee the community-facing version of the Waste Infrastructure Plan 2025-2045 had been updated after committee feedback. It will go to council in June 2026 for consideration and adoption.

That report is also expected to include a recommendation to start site selection for a northern community recycling centre. The plan is part of the City’s longer-term waste planning work.

The committee was also told the City is revising its strategic waste documents, including the draft Strategic Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Plan 2025-2035, to use State Government terminology. Administration said the timing has been pushed back because of matters involving the Mindarie Regional Council and the need to reflect regional planning and future infrastructure issues.

The quarterly operations report gave councillors an update on waste services ending April 2026. Waste Services operates from the Ashby Operations Centre and was described as a unit with 54 operational staff and 19 administrative staff.

The report said general waste is collected weekly, yellow-lid recycling fortnightly and garden organics fortnightly for eligible properties of 400 square metres or more. The City also runs the Wangara Recycling Facility at 70 Motivation Drive, Wangara, where fee-paying residents can drop off materials that do not go in kerbside bins.

The committee was told the City has finalised a contract for an Expanded Polystyrene Compactor at the Wangara Recycling Facility. It also heard construction of the Wangara Transfer Station has been completed and the site has been formally handed over to Waste Services.

The report listed ongoing work with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions on illegal dumping detection and signage, and said a digital works management platform is being rolled out with the City Services team. The Quarterly Operations Report was received unanimously, 6-0.

The next Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled for 20 July 2026 at 6pm.
