A petition to change the Merriwa park from Neighbourhood Sport to Neighbourhood Recreation will be investigated before a response is brought back to council.

A petition signed by residents seeking to reclassify Addison Park in Merriwa will return to Wanneroo council after administration investigates the request.

The petition, tabled at the City of Wanneroo’s Ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday, asks for Addison Park’s current Neighbourhood Sport classification to be changed to Neighbourhood Recreation.

Administration will prepare a response for a future Ordinary Council Meeting. No date was given, and councillors did not make a final decision on the classification at this meeting.

P Reviti, of Ridgewood, told councillors they were an administrator and social organiser for the Biggles Loves Addison Facebook group, which had 198 members. Reviti also said they were a signatory to the petition.

Questions at the meeting examined how the City had assessed Addison Park’s role and engaged with people who use it. The City said its last official needs analysis was completed through the Active Reserve Master Plan process in 2014/15.

That process included a citywide online survey of existing active-reserve users, stakeholder workshops, council engagement and public comment on the draft plan. The City said sporting clubs were engaged through workshops because the plan focused on improvements to active sporting reserves, while broader community engagement took place through the survey and public-comment phases.

Separate work on access at the park is also progressing. Funding for feasibility and design of an accessible connecting pathway at Addison Park is included in the 2026/27 Capital Works Program.

Construction timing will depend on the design work and budget considerations. The pathway project is separate from the petition, which will be considered in a future report to council.

The petition seeks a classification that supporters say better reflects Addison Park’s recreational and environmental role. Until council considers the future report, the park’s existing Neighbourhood Sport classification remains in place.
