Orange council adopts sport committee minutes and records Huntley Road lighting issue
Orange City Council adopted Sport & Recreation Community Committee minutes at its 2 June meeting and recorded an amendment about Huntley Road carpark lighting, while officers said revised active transport and open spaces strategies are due back on 16 June.
Orange City Council adopted minutes from the Sport & Recreation Community Committee meeting of 6 May 2026 at its Recreation & Culture Policy Committee meeting on 2 June, and added an amendment noting discussion and advice about lighting at the Huntley Road carpark.
The committee also accepted the apology from Cr J Whitton and granted leave of absence. No pecuniary or non-pecuniary interests were declared.
Cr D Mallard asked when the Active Transport Strategy and the Open Spaces & Recreation Strategy would go on exhibition. Chief Executive Officer said both documents had been reviewed by the Executive Leadership Team, changes were required, and they were expected to return to Council on 16 June 2026.
The Huntley Road carpark drew more attention after Cr G Judge said the carpark is already open and being used at night despite having no lighting. The CEO said the carpark was built with conduit installed so lighting can be added once the budget allows.
Cr Judge asked for an update on carpark lighting at the sporting precinct and wanted any response to include costs.
Members also discussed an interim option at Bernie Stedman Field. Cr T Mileto asked whether lights could be installed on the back of the pole at the south-east corner of the field to provide lighting for the Huntley Road carpark. The CEO said that option can be considered.
Cr T Greenhalgh then asked whether Council still has access to old lighting used during the Wade Park upgrade. The CEO confirmed it does.
The committee also heard an update on Orange’s bid to host a visiting Rugby Union World Cup team. Cr S Peterson asked for progress, and the CEO said the Mayor and he attended an event in Sydney. The next stage is for event organisers to visit Orange and meet with Council staff.
