Orange backs netball history book with $2,000 donation

Orange City Council’s Finance Policy Committee approved four community funding allocations on 7 April, including support for an 84-year history of netball in Orange.

Orange City Council has approved a $2,000 donation to Orange Netball Association to help publish “Scoring Goals: 84 Years of Netball in Orange (1942-2026)”.

The funding was one of four community allocations endorsed at the Finance Policy Committee meeting in Orange on 7 April. The committee also approved $1,500 for Regional Development Australia Central West for the TEN4TEN mentoring program, $750 for Mr Perfect Incorporated to help cover charity BBQ operating costs in Orange, and $2,500 for Wangarang’s Fair Day and Garage Sale.

The netball publication funding supports a local sporting organisation and a record of community history in Orange. The other approved donations back a mentoring program, charity activities and a local event already scheduled for 2 May 2026.

The minutes show the small donations item was split and voted on separately. Cr John Whitton declared a significant non-pecuniary interest in the Orange Netball Association donation because OCTEC is a sponsor of the association and he is OCTEC chairman. He left the meeting for that item and returned after the vote.

Cr Glenn Power also declared a non-significant non-pecuniary interest in the TEN4TEN item because he is a mentor in the program. He left during discussion and voting on that donation, then returned to the meeting.

For residents, the decisions mean several local groups and programs will receive modest council support, including a publication focused on Orange sporting history and an upcoming Wangarang community event.

The approved donations and event funding are set to proceed following the committee resolutions. Wangarang’s Fair Day and Garage Sale is scheduled for 2 May 2026.
