People sleeping rough, or at risk of losing housing, will keep getting support from Hobart after councillors approved a three-year contribution to the Salvation Army’s Street to Home program. The funding starts on 1 July 2026 and is set at $35,000 a year, with 3% indexation in years two and three.

The council endorsed a budget allocation for the partnership and locked in the annual contribution for the full three years. That means the payment will begin at $35,000 in the first year, then rise by 3% in the second and third years of the agreement.

Street to Home is aimed at people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. The Salvation Army program will receive the council contribution from 1 July 2026, giving it a defined funding stream through to the end of the three-year term.

The vote came alongside a broader set of housing and community decisions, including endorsement of the Housing Action Plan and Background Paper. But this funding item was specific to one program and one provider, with a clear dollar figure attached.

For Hobart residents, the practical result is a continuing council-backed service for people who need help to stay housed or find support while facing homelessness. The commitment also gives the Salvation Army a longer financial runway for the program.

The three-year arrangement is one of the clearer social support commitments in the council's latest round of decisions. The annual amount stays at $35,000 in year one, then rises by 3% in each of the next two years.

The partnership is due to start on 1 July 2026.

The council's approval was for a financial contribution to the Salvation Army’s Street to Home program, not a one-off grant.
