Hobart households and businesses to pay new waste, FOGO and levy-offset charges from 1 July
Council’s 2026-27 budget locks in $280 residential waste charges, $560 non-residential charges, FOGO fees and a levy-offset fee for the new financial year.
Hobart households and businesses will pay new waste-related charges from 1 July after the City of Hobart adopted its 2026-27 budget, rates and fees package. The rates resolution includes separate charges for residential and non-residential waste services, FOGO collection and a levy offset tied to state waste costs.
Under the resolution, the waste management service charge is $280 for residential properties and $560 for non-residential properties. Council also set an $88 charge for kerbside food organics garden organics collection where the service is provided fortnightly, and a $182 charge where the service is provided weekly with a FOGO bin.
The levy offset service charge is $29 for residential properties and $58 for non-residential properties. Council also approved a $121 initial service charge for waste or recycling for residential or non-residential properties, and a $198 charge to upgrade a residential bin from 120 litres to 240 litres.
The 2026-27 Fees and Charges Update was approved as part of the budget package. The resolution also set different fire rate levels by land use, including residential, commercial, industrial, public enterprise and sporting or recreation categories.
The Lord Mayor said the budget targets a modest $3 million surplus, includes more than $3 million in operational savings and maintains a sustainable debt position. Residential ratepayers were told the average rates rise equates to about $1.82 a week.
The new charges will feed into council bills across Hobart from 1 July 2026. For households using FOGO, and for businesses facing the higher non-residential waste charges, the impact will show up in the first rates notices of the new year.
