Hobart budget banks $3 million surplus and more than $3 million in savings
The Lord Mayor says the 2026-27 budget is built to deliver a modest $3 million surplus, more than $3 million in operational savings and a sustainable debt position.
Hobart has locked in a 2026-27 budget that targets a modest $3 million surplus and more than $3 million in operational savings, while the Lord Mayor says debt will stay sustainable. The focus is on holding down cost pressures without cutting back on services and capital works.
The savings sit alongside funding for road and footpath renewal, stormwater renewal, aquatic centre upgrades, the Domain Athletic Centre track and lifts at the Wellington Centre. The Lord Mayor said the budget is aimed at keeping the city’s core works program moving.
Council also adopted the 2026-27 Budget Estimates, Annual Plan and Rates Resolution, as well as the year’s fees and charges update. The package includes a general rate of 0.3016 cents in the dollar of capital value, differential rates by land use and waste-related charges, including FOGO collection and a waste management levy offset charge.
The rates debate was not without pressure points. During public question time, one speaker asked whether council had properly examined savings inside its own business operations before leaning on motorists, pointing to parking changes near the Royal Hobart Hospital, Argyle Street, Campbell Street and proposed Gladstone Street.
The Lord Mayor said those questions could not be accepted that night because an agenda item covered the same topic. They will be treated as general correspondence and answered in writing.
For residents, the budget locks in the rates, fees and charges that will apply through 2026-27, along with the spending priorities behind them. It also confirms the council is trying to keep a modest surplus while funding maintenance, facilities and other core infrastructure.
The financial picture sits within a wider set of council decisions, but the budget was the clearest signal on the night: Hobart wants savings to do some of the heavy lifting as it works through another year of cost pressure.
