Allawah Railway Parade safety-fencing request rejected 8-5
The Railway Parade proposal at Lily Street and Elizabeth Street was rejected 8-5, with no alternative safety treatment approved for the Allawah intersections.
A request for pedestrian safety fencing at Railway Parade’s intersections with Lily Street and Elizabeth Street in Allawah has been rejected after an 8-5 vote, ending the current proposal for barriers at the two crossings.
The recommendation said installing safety fencing at both locations was not supported and that no further action should be taken. It was moved by Councillors Kathryn Landsberry and Nancy Liu.
Councillors Elaina Anzellotti, Thomas Gao, Gerard Hayes, Leon Pun and Ben Wang voted against the recommendation. The motion was carried with eight votes in favour and five against.
The proposal was considered as part of the Local Transport Forum recommendations before the Georges River Council Assets and Infrastructure Committee on 13 July 2026. The fencing request was one of three forum items excluded from the broader recommendation to adopt the listed transport measures.
No alternative pedestrian-safety treatment was approved for the two Railway Parade intersections. The material considered did not provide a timetable for another crossing treatment or safety project at either location.
The committee also supported other transport measures in nearby suburbs. At Lynwood Street and Waratah Street, Blakehurst, the proposed works include median islands, speed cushions, kerb blisters, associated signage and ‘No Stopping’ restrictions.
In Mortdale, proposed works at Roberts Avenue include supplementary Give Way lines at Beatty, Bowman and Barr streets, school-period No Parking restrictions, and an extended No Stopping zone on Beatty Street. A pedestrian refuge island with kerb extensions and ramps was listed as a long-term measure, subject to community consultation and funding availability.
For Allawah residents and pedestrians, the requested fencing will not proceed under this proposal, and no replacement treatment has been approved for Lily Street or Elizabeth Street.
