Apex Park toilet stays in limbo after bid to keep it open fails
Central Coast councillors rejected talks with Wyong Christian Community School about keeping the public facility open, then backed a report on its proposed closure and demolition.
The future of the Apex Park public toilet in Wyong remains unresolved after Central Coast Council’s Infrastructure and Assets Committee rejected a proposal to discuss keeping it open to the public. The committee then carried a motion noting that a report would be prepared on the facility’s future after the exhibition period.
The amendment was moved by Cr Jane Smith and seconded by Cr Belinda Neal during consideration of an update on the proposed closure and demolition of the toilet. It called for discussions with Wyong Christian Community School about a possible agreed condition of consent requiring the facility to remain open to the public.
Cr Neal, Cr Kyla Daniels and Cr Smith voted for the amendment. Deputy Mayor Rachel Stanton, Cr Doug Eaton OAM, Cr Jared Wright and Mayor John McNamara voted against it, and the amendment was lost.
The original motion was then carried, with Deputy Mayor Stanton, Cr Eaton, Cr Wright and Mayor McNamara voting for it, and Cr Neal and Cr Smith voting against.
The carried motion noted the response to an earlier Infrastructure and Assets Committee resolution, thanked Darren Milligan, principal executive of Wyong Christian Community School, for his presentation and noted that a report would be prepared for Council after the exhibition period on the recommended action for the Apex Park toilet facility.
The vote did not determine whether the toilet will close or be demolished. It also rejected the proposed discussions about keeping it open to the public.
The committee did not specify when the follow-up report would return or what recommendation it would contain. The issue remains a local service question for people using Apex Park, as well as for Wyong Christian Community School and the surrounding community.
