Enfield aquatic centre redevelopment approved, bringing gym and library pod
The Burwood Local Planning Panel unanimously approved works at 8 Portland Street, including new facilities, landscaping, Henley Park works and parking changes.
Enfield’s ageing aquatic centre will be redeveloped after the Burwood Local Planning Panel unanimously approved Development Application DA.2026.45 for 8 Portland Street on 1 October.
The project includes demolition, alterations and additions to the existing centre, a gymnasium, a library pod, landscaping and associated civil works in Henley Park. It also includes changes to the centre’s car park and on-street parking arrangements.
The approval is subject to revised draft conditions circulated by Burwood Council on 1 October. No construction timetable was specified.
The panel said the proposal was consistent with the objectives of the RE1 Public Recreation zone and would provide a significant public benefit. It found the redevelopment would replace ageing infrastructure and renew the centre to current safety and accessibility standards.
The gymnasium and library pod will expand the facilities and services available to the public. Future construction, landscaping and parking changes will affect visitors, nearby residents and Henley Park users.
The panel said the development, subject to conditions, would not unreasonably compromise the amenity of nearby properties. It also considered the redevelopment’s effect on heritage significance under Clause 5.10(4) of the Burwood Local Environmental Plan 2012.
It found that issues raised in submissions had been adequately addressed in the assessment report and revised conditions. The project can progress under the approved conditions, but the timing of construction and final condition wording were not specified.
