Land at Corner Snapper and Hutley Drive to remain under review

Lennox Head council land housing proposal endorsed

Council endorsed preparing a planning proposal to amend Ballina Local Environmental Plan 2012 to allow the dwelling densities, numbers and types in Concepts 2 and 3 for council land at Lennox Head. An amendment seeking a report on a legally binding affordable housing mechanism for local key workers was lost.

This could change the scale and type of housing developed on council land in Lennox Head.

Local Strategic Planning Statement adopted

Council adopted the Ballina Shire Local Strategic Planning Statement 2025-2046 and addendum, with amendments including more employment land investigation, changes affecting Alstonville, Newrybar and rural planning actions, and a further report in April 2026 on North Kinvara, Cumbalum and West Lennox Palms.

This sets long-term land use and growth planning across the shire and may affect future housing, employment land, village planning and rural protections.

CCTV contract awarded with more sites to be reviewed

Council awarded the CCTV infrastructure supply and installation contract to Dash Group Australia for $493,946.85 excluding GST, and requested a further report after liaison with NSW Police on extra priority sites including Lennox Head, Shaws Bay, Burns Point Ferry Road, Alstonville and Wollongbar.

This funds CCTV rollout now and may lead to expanded surveillance and crime prevention measures in additional locations.

Lennox Head Shared Zone safety advice

The forum recommended that Police continue regular patrols in the area and that Council investigate painting the approach ramp a different colour to distinguish it from the road surface.

May affect road safety treatments and driver/pedestrian awareness in the shared zone area.

Topics

Raynor Lane shared zone signage and pedestrian safety

Members discussed existing shared zone signage, safety for pedestrians, and confusion caused by pavement changes and the lack of a sign at the start of the right-hand turn.

Declared interests on the croquet item

Multiple councillors and senior staff declared non-significant, non-pecuniary interests because they are members of Cherry Street Sports Club. One councillor also declared a sponsorship-related interest through Business Lennox Head. Those councillors remained in the meeting and voted.

Residents may view these declarations as relevant context for transparency around the debate and vote.

Three growth areas removed for further examination

Council removed Precinct B North Kinvara, Precinct C Cumbalum, and West Lennox Palms, Lennox Head from the identified SUGAs and requested they be reported back for further examination.

Potential urban growth in these areas is not proceeding as proposed and will return to Council later.
