Redland City Council adopts $99.52 landfill remediation charge

Redland City Council has approved a $99.52 annual Landfill Remediation Separate Charge for every rateable lot, to start on 1 July 2026.

Published 30 June 2026Meeting 30 June 2026

Redland City Council has adopted a new Landfill Remediation Separate Charge of $99.52 a year for every rateable lot, with the decision taken at the special budget meeting in Cleveland on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.

The charge applies equally to all rateable land in the local government area on a per-lot basis. The minutes say it is subject to Council’s Farming Concession.

Council said the money will fund operational projects and activities linked to monitoring and remediating closed landfills.

Those works include landfill monitoring and leachate management at Charlie Buckler Memorial Sporting Fields and Sharks Football Park, Redland Bay closed landfill monitoring and gas management, monitoring at South Street former Sanitary depot, North Stradbroke closed landfill and Russell Island Closed Landfill, and monitoring and capping remediation at Birkdale closed Landfill.

The list also includes Giles Road closed Hardfill, Judy Holt Northern Landfill major remediation works, landfill survey and surface remediation, monitoring at Judy Holt Park and Duncan Road Baseball Fields, monitoring Laurie Burns Closed Landfill on Coochiemudlo Island, monitoring at John Fredericks Park, closed landfill administration, minor maintenance works and the landfill site investigations program.

The resolution was carried 9/1. Cr Tracey Huges voted against the motion and Cr Jos Mitchell was absent from the meeting.

The landfill charge sits alongside the wider 2026-2027 budget and revenue statement adopted by council at the same meeting. In his budget address, the Acting Mayor said the city was facing rising costs and a growing waste levy burden, and that council had sought to keep household rates as low as possible.

The minutes also record that the report and attachment were to remain confidential until all items of business in the special budget meeting had been approved.
