Orange City Council’s salt treatment costs less than $1,000 a year, with street sweepers applying salt in the early morning where needed across Orange.

Acting Director Infrastructure confirmed the figure after Cr T Mileto asked whether salt granules were being applied at black-ice spots and how much the treatment cost each year.

The council did not identify the locations of black-ice spots, specify how much salt is used or provide a schedule for applications. Its advice was limited to saying street sweepers apply salt in the early hours of the morning where needed.

The discussion focused on salt use on footpaths and the cost of the treatment to Council. It was raised during a wider discussion of transport and infrastructure at the Infrastructure Policy Committee’s 4 August meeting.

The committee also approved two parking changes on Anson Street near the Orange Public School infants campus. Parking angles at two locations will be changed to 45° rear-to-kerb parking.

At the Sundew Circuit entry on Anson Street, a No Stopping sign will move 6 metres west.

Cr J Whitton separately asked for a review of speed-limit signage on Anson Street after the limit changes from 60 km/h to 50 km/h when turning from Brabham Way.

Councillors also asked about several infrastructure and water projects. Chief Executive Officer advised that a tender report, including a funding plan for the Planetarium fit-out, will be provided at the next Council meeting.

Questions were also raised about the John Davis Stadium main-surface tender at the Orange Sports Precinct, the next-quarter Decision Support Tool, stormwater harvesting, the Macquarie Pipeline and the Purified Recycled Water Demonstration Plant. A business case and detailed consultancy report for the demonstration plant are expected in the coming months.
