Ipswich State Budget review deferred, leaving advocacy priorities unresolved
Ipswich City Council has delayed its State Budget Summary and a separate major-projects update, with no date set for either item to return.
Ipswich residents will wait longer for council’s assessment of State Budget implications after the State Budget Summary was deferred to a future Advocacy Advisory Committee meeting. No return date was stated.
The report was not finalised at the 11 August meeting of the Economic and Cultural Development Committee. It is expected to inform council’s assessment of State Budget funding and advocacy priorities for the Ipswich region.
Councillors also deferred the Regionally Significant Projects Update to a future Advocacy Advisory Committee meeting, leaving the council’s update on major infrastructure advocacy priorities unresolved.
The deferrals follow the committee’s consideration of Federal Budget 2026 - 27 measures affecting Ipswich. Councillors noted there was no new infrastructure investment for Ipswich, Financial Assistance Grants had fallen to 0.49 per cent, and the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program had stopped.
The committee also noted that the Thriving Suburbs Program is returning. A quarter of the $2 billion Local Infrastructure Fund, or $500 million, was dedicated to regional Australia.
Economic Development Manager Dan Heenan said Inland Rail was a key regionally significant project. He said council had engaged with the Queensland Government about other funding pathways for infrastructure needed to activate the area. Meetings were held with various departments the previous week, and the government was interested in forming a working group with council to identify a possible pathway for delivering the available infrastructure.
Council’s Advocacy Plan is scheduled for the 2028 elections. Requests under each advocacy priority will be refreshed and brought back to the committee for review. Mayor Teresa Harding asked councillors to continue advocating for projects with ministers and shadow ministers.
Both deferred items will return to future Advocacy Advisory Committee meetings, but council has not stated when either will be considered.
