Ipswich gets no new federal infrastructure funding as roads program ends

Ipswich received no new federal infrastructure investment in the 2026 - 2027 Budget, while Financial Assistance Grants fell to 0.49% and the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program stopped, Ipswich City Council says.
Mayor Teresa Harding told councillors the Thriving Suburbs Program was returning. She also noted that $500 million of the $2 billion Local Infrastructure Fund had been dedicated to regional Australia, leaving $1.5 billion for suburban, urban and peri-urban funding.
The figures were discussed as councillors considered the Federal Budget’s implications for local government and the Ipswich region. No specific Ipswich project was identified as having lost funding, and no forecast was given for the effect on Council’s infrastructure budget.
Inland Rail was identified as a regionally significant project for the Ipswich region. Economic Development Manager Dan Heenan said Council had engaged with the Queensland Government about alternative funding pathways for the infrastructure needed to bring the project online.
Meetings with several State Government departments were held the previous week. Mr Heenan said the government was interested in forming a working group with Council to investigate a pathway for delivering the available infrastructure and activating the Inland Rail space.
The committee deferred its State Budget Summary and Regionally Significant Projects Update to future Advocacy Advisory Committee meetings.
Council’s list of advocacy requests under each priority will be refreshed and brought back for review ahead of the 2028 elections. Mayor Harding also asked councillors to continue advocating for projects with ministers and shadow ministers when possible.
The funding discussion came as Council separately received a report on the Nicholas Street Precinct redevelopment and leasing program, with detailed attachments confidential. It also noted more than $55,000 in event sponsorship allocations, including $25,000 for the 2026 Gulf Western Oil Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway.
