Reporting from draft minutes. Recorded wording may change when confirmed. How this article was prepared

Future naming or renaming of an Ipswich City Council asset must take place only after the Mayor and councillors are informed, under a policy position recorded in the council’s unconfirmed minutes.

Resolution C2026/00/378 applies to parks, bridges, buildings, community facilities, roads, reserves and other public infrastructure. The recorded wording does not require the Mayor or councillors to approve a name, and it does not set out a public consultation process.

The original recommendation proposed consultation with the Mayor, councillors representing the relevant division and the chair of the Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee. It also proposed a report on feedback received during the process.

Councillor Paul Tully proposed replacing that wording with a requirement that future naming and renaming occur only after informing the Mayor and councillors. Councillor Pye Augustine and Councillor Andrew Antoniolli, the motion’s mover and seconder, agreed to the amendment.

The minutes record the amended resolution as carried, with all listed councillors recorded as affirmative and none as negative. They do not explain how the notification must occur or whether further public information will be provided before a name is decided.

What deserves a closer look

The final wording establishes notification to the Mayor and councillors, but the cited resolution does not state that they must approve a name or that public consultation must occur.

The minutes do not state how notification will be provided or what further public information will be released.
