Ipswich council backs return to mayor and 10 single-councillor divisions
Residents will be consulted on a proposed electoral structure that would give Ipswich 10 single-councillor divisions alongside a mayor.
Ipswich residents will be consulted on a proposal to return the city to a mayor and 10 single-councillor divisions, after Ipswich City Council requested urgent consideration by the Local Government Change Commission.
Council resolved on Thursday to refer the proposal to Queensland’s Minister for Local Government and Water, Hon Ann Leahy MP, and the commission. The referral is to proceed as soon as practicable.
Consultation will begin in parallel with the referral process, with council to provide the outcomes to the minister and the commission.
The proposal would change how Ipswich councillors are elected, but it does not itself alter the current electoral arrangements. Any change remains subject to the required state process.
The Local Government Change Commission is the body that would assess the proposed arrangement if it is referred by the responsible minister.
The electoral proposal was one of several decisions made by council on 24 September. Council also adopted amendments to its 2026 - 2027 planning and development fees and charges, although the individual amounts were not listed in the decision.
Council approved a change to development approval 7213/2014/MAMC/E, originally associated with Queensland Planning and Environment Court Judgment No. 107 of 2023. The approval was made subject to conditions and attachments, but the site and specific conditions were not identified.
At Ebbw Vale War Memorial, council resolved to remove and repair the damaged stone soldier. Removal will follow advice from the chief executive officer, with repairs, re-installation and re-dedication to be completed before ANZAC Day 2027.
Council also approved differential general-rate concessions for properties including 36 Moffatt Street, Ipswich; 12 and 10 Glebe Road, Newtown; 97 Pine Mountain Road, Brassall; and 10A Glebe Road, Newtown. Properties at 55 and 59 Sarah Drive, Yamanto, were approved for a 100 per cent concession, backdated to the relevant application date.
