Raised pedestrian and bike crossing backed for Marrickville Road at Sydney Street

Inner West Council’s Local Transport Forum has approved the detailed design for a raised pedestrian and bicycle crossing at the Marrickville intersection after consultation with nearby residents and businesses.

A raised pedestrian and bicycle crossing is set to go ahead at the intersection of Marrickville Road and Sydney Street in Marrickville, after Inner West Council’s Local Transport Forum approved the detailed design plan for the work.

The April 20 forum minutes show the crossing was brought forward after feedback during consultation on the Marrickville Road East Cycleway, when community members called for an additional raised crossing near Sydney Street. Traffic and pedestrian counts taken in July 2025 found the site met Council’s pedestrian crossing warrants.

The approved plan is listed as Design Plan No. 21437-01. During the meeting, forum members were told the crossing would be raised above road level but slightly lower than footpath level so buses could pass over it more comfortably, because the location is on a bus route.

For residents, pedestrians and bike riders using this part of Marrickville Road, the project is intended to improve crossing safety and access at a point identified through community feedback and warrant checks. The forum minutes record support from a public speaker, who said the proposal would benefit both pedestrians and cyclists.

The same meeting also approved the Lilyfield Road cycleway and angle parking design between Maliyawul Street and Victoria Road, including a bidirectional cycleway, shared path, raised crossings, kerb buildouts and traffic calming measures. It also supported temporary parklets in Australia Street, Newtown, although that proposal was amended to go to the April 2026 Council meeting for consideration.

The Marrickville crossing can now proceed on the approved detailed design following the forum’s endorsement.
