20 Lilyfield households challenge Alberto Street parking plan as Rozelle cycleway advances
Inner West Council will study parking across Alberto, Maida and Victoria streets before deciding on restrictions, while adding a northern-side Robert Street path to its Capital Works program.
A petition from 20 households in Maida Street and Victoria Street has put proposed parking restrictions in Alberto Street, Lilyfield, on hold, while Inner West Council advances plans for a separated cycleway in Robert Street, Rozelle.
Council resolved to acknowledge Alberto Street residents’ concerns about long-term parking and the availability of spaces. It also noted objections from nearby residents who said restrictions in Alberto Street would shift parking pressure into surrounding streets.
A parking study and community consultation covering the surrounding streets, including Maida and Victoria streets, will be presented to the October 2026 Local Transport Forum meeting. The proposed Alberto Street restrictions will remain paused until that broader review is completed.
In Rozelle, a separated pedestrian and cycle path along the northern side of Robert Street, between Mullens Street and Buchanan Street, will be included in Council’s Capital Works program, subject to detailed design and community consultation.
The design includes kerb extensions and a raised pedestrian and bicycle crossing. Council also resolved to continue pursuing a separated path on the southern side of Robert Street, which it identifies as the preferred side for a long-term cycleway.
Council will write to the Port Authority to renew its request for a pedestrian and cycle path on Port Authority land along Robert Street, from Mullens Street to Buchanan Street. A report, including the authority’s written response, is due at the September 2026 council meeting.
Both transport resolutions were carried unanimously. The Robert Street resolution was supported by all 14 councillors recorded in the vote, with none against. The Alberto Street resolution also received 14 votes in favour and none against.
Neither resolution sets a construction date or project cost for the Robert Street path. The Lilyfield parking proposal also remains subject to further study and consultation.
