City of Hobart approves Allbrook Close for Mount Nelson subdivision

The Hobart Workshop Committee approved Allbrook Close for a new road at 512 Nelson Road, with McQuitty and Shield listed as back-up names if the choice is not supported.

The City of Hobart has approved Allbrook Close for a new road through a subdivision at 512 Nelson Road, Mount Nelson, after the Hobart Workshop Committee met on 15 June 2026 at 4pm.

If Allbrook Close is not supported, the developer is to choose from two pre-approved alternatives: McQuitty or Shield. The endorsed name, together with the committee report, is to be lodged with the Place Names Tasmania Register, and the developer is to be formally advised of the decision.

The road naming item was one of the main decisions on the open agenda. The committee also confirmed the minutes of its previous open meeting, received no supplementary items and recorded no conflicts of interest.

The new name matters for future addresses, maps, wayfinding and emergency response in Mount Nelson. The subdivision site is at 512 Nelson Road.

Members also heard a workshop presentation on Royal Hobart Hospital works and their traffic impacts. Tasmanian Government Health Officials and Royal Hobart Hospital representatives outlined Emergency Department expansion works, related access changes and temporary traffic arrangements, including left-turn restrictions from Argyle Street into Liverpool Street during part of the project.

The hospital works are expected to run for about two years. The presentation said public communication and signage will be updated to support access changes for hospital users, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Members asked about the proposed no-left-turn arrangement from Argyle Street into Liverpool Street, whether it should remain in place permanently or only during the works, and whether restrictions should apply during set hours or all day. They also asked whether traffic changes would increase pressure on Bathurst Street, Campbell Street and nearby roads, and whether further modelling could be done to understand the broader traffic impacts.

Questions were also raised about signage for after-hours access, extra signage around Campbell Street and whether a temporary bike lane could be retained during the works. It was advised that this was not possible because a loading zone was needed, while staff bicycle parking would continue to be available.

The committee also received workshop briefings on the Central Hobart Plan and the MacPoint Master Plan. No decisions were taken on those items in the open portion, and the meeting later closed for confidential business.

There being no further business, the open portion of the meeting closed at 6.34pm.
