Gold Coast approves 54 dwellings after rejecting larger proposal
Council backed a conditions-based permit for 54 multiple dwellings at its 2 April meeting, after a related 60-dwelling version had been refused in committee.
The City of Gold Coast approved a development permit for 54 multiple dwellings with conditions at its Thursday 2 April meeting, after a related committee recommendation had refused a 60-dwelling version.
The minutes do not name the site. The vote marked a shift from refusal to approval, and it came within a wider batch of committee recommendations covering planning scheme updates, road safety petitions, budget items and controlled-entity changes.
On planning, councillors noted progress on the New Planning Scheme Program and the Local Growth Management Strategy. They endorsed the HOTA Master Plan, The Spit Master Plan, Mudgeeraba Village and Robina to be integrated as Local Plans. They also backed concept plans for Nobby Beach and Miami North for drafting of the new scheme.
The meeting also dealt with a safety petition about Caningeraba State School and Dunlin Drive near Dunlin Drive Link Park. Council did not support a zebra crossing at this stage, but it did support extra warning signage, vegetation works and investigations into a supervised children’s crossing and a pedestrian refuge island with pathway connections.
Clagiraba Road also came before councillors. They requested targeted speed enforcement, asked the Mayor to write to State Ministers, supported a vehicle activated speed sign and backed a request for a high-friction surface treatment in the 2026-27 budget. Council did not support traffic calming or permanent road closure.
Residents will also see changes in how some city functions are run. Council endorsed transferring the Arts Fund administration and funding from Experience Gold Coast to City Administration, shifting aviation attraction services from Invest Gold Coast to Experience Gold Coast, and changing Brand Gold Coast’s services and funding agreement.
Council adopted recommendations on the draft 2026-27 budget process, the budget survey, general rates and separate charges strategy, and a confidential report on service integration and demand-led operating changes. It also adopted petition responses on wandering cats and a review of animal noise nuisance laws.
The meeting also amended committee memberships, replacing Cr D Gates as deputy chair for Governance, Administration and Finance with Cr J Martin.
