Cumberland Council approved $175,132 in community grants, endorsed planning changes for parts of Berala, Auburn and South Granville, and awarded several major contracts, including work at Granville Swim Centre.
Cumberland Council has approved $175,132 in community grants, backed several major tenders and endorsed planning changes for parts of Berala, Auburn and South Granville at its 27 May meeting.
The council funded 17 recommended applications from the 2025/26 Community Grants Program. It also approved contracts for pool re-lining at Granville Swim Centre, multifunction devices and print management, floodlighting upgrades at Peter Hislop Park fields 1 and 2 and Granville Park fields 1 and 2, and roofing works for seniors units.
Mattioli Bros Pty Ltd won the Granville Swim Centre pool re-lining contract. Canon Australia Pty Ltd was selected for multifunction devices and print management. Rees Electrical Pty Ltd was awarded the two floodlighting upgrade contracts.
Councillors also endorsed in-principle amendments to the Cumberland Local Environmental Plan and Cumberland Development Control Plan. The planning report covered controls near Berala station, heritage-related sites at Mary Street in Auburn and Clyde Street and Factory Street, and proposed changes at 106 Woodburn Road, Berala, and 40 to 44 and 46 Wellington Road, South Granville.
An amendment moved by Cr Garrard and Cr Hughes that would have taken a harder line on some of those sites was lost 3-11. The substantive motion then passed 8-6.
The meeting also dealt with a code change after NSW Parliament passed a disallowance motion. Council rescinded the 2025 Model Code of Meeting Practice and reverted to its adopted 2022 code.
Among the other resolutions, council placed the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2026-2030 on public exhibition for 28 days, backed a new annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education scholarship worth $1,000 each for two recipients, and supported urgent homelessness work at Civic Park, Pendle Hill.
Council also asked for a three-month campaign to lift electronic rates notices from about 20 per cent to at least 30 per cent. It agreed to investigate an ongoing free Cinema in the Park program from the Christmas school holidays 2026 and to commence an audit of parks and playgrounds.
The meeting was extended by one hour and speech times were later cut to two minutes for the rest of the night.
