Inner West Council
Local Transport Forum - 16 Feb 2026 11:00 AM
The forum backed a range of local traffic, parking and pedestrian safety changes, including new one-way, speed-limit, crossing and parking treatments across several Inner West streets, while deferring some resident parking and access issues for further review.
Topics
- Inner West backs speed cuts, crossings and traffic calming across multiple suburbs
The forum endorsed or advanced a broad package of local road changes, including 40 km/h precincts, a new pedestrian crossing, raised treatments and a shared zone.
These changes will affect how residents drive, walk and cycle across several busy Inner West streets and suburbs. - Parking and access changes on local streets remain contentious
The meeting dealt with several parking-sensitive items, including car share spaces, angle parking on Schwebel Street and a laneway dispute in Marrickville.
Parking allocations and access restrictions can directly affect residents, traders and local traffic flow. - Cyclist access to one-way streets may be expanded in Balmain
Council supported ‘bicycles excepted’ signage on College Street and heard requests to review similar restrictions elsewhere in Balmain.
This is a practical change to how cyclists can move through local streets and may set up further one-way access reviews.
Decisions
- GoGet car share parking spaces approved in principle
Council considered a request for 15 dedicated on-street car share spaces across the Inner West LGA and supported locations including Petersham and Stanmore, with accompanying restrictions and no-stopping signage near Clarendon Road and Northumberland Avenue.
May affect local parking availability, street access and future car share pricing in affected neighbourhoods. - College Street ‘bicycles excepted’ signage supported
The forum supported installing ‘bicycles excepted’ signage under the existing one-way westbound signs on College Street between Cameron Street and Curtis Road, Balmain.
Allows cyclists to legally travel in the opposite direction on this street while keeping the one-way restriction for other traffic. - Wells Street continuous footpath approved
Detailed design plan 10366 for a continuous footpath treatment at Wells Street intersecting with King Street, Newtown was approved.
Aims to improve pedestrian safety and vehicle turning behaviour at this intersection. - Union Street, Tempe raised treatments and shared zone supported in principle
Council supported multiple traffic calming measures in Tempe, including at-grade contrasting pavement treatments, raised threshold works and a proposed 10 km/h shared zone on Union Street between Princes Highway and School Lane, subject to TfNSW approval.
Could change local driving speeds, pedestrian priority and access patterns in Tempe. - Wardell Road crossing warranted for further pedestrian safety measures
Council found the proposed pedestrian crossing at Wardell Road north of the Cooks River Bridge met the crossing warrant policy and will progress the raised pedestrian crossing proposal.
Improves safety for people walking and cycling near a busy river crossing in Marrickville. - No change to Warren Road laneway parking, with further review of restrictions
The forum resolved to keep existing parking arrangements at the rear of No.43 Warren Road, Marrickville, and asked officers to investigate stronger restrictions at the bend in the laneway and at Church Street/Unnamed Lane instead.
Preserves current parking access for nearby residents while looking at other ways to improve laneway access.
Discussion
- InnerWest@40 speed limit reductions
The forum discussed proposed reductions from 50 km/h to 40 km/h across selected precincts in Leichhardt, Annandale, Dulwich Hill North, Lewisham, South Ashfield and Summer Hill West. Officers said existing signs will be replaced at implementation and further review will occur through the LATM process.
May reduce vehicle speeds on local streets and affect rat-running and travel times. - Schwebel Street angle parking consultation requested
An additional recommendation was added for Council to investigate and consult with residents and businesses about angle parking on the north side of Schwebel Street between Station Street and Leofrene Avenue.
Could change parking supply and street access near local homes and businesses. - Transport and access concerns in Tempe South and nearby streets
Residents raised concerns about Brooklyn Street and Brooklyn Lane becoming a rat run, signage at Princes Highway/Union Street, and the need for clearer traffic controls following nearby development.
May lead to more traffic management changes and follow-up reviews in the Tempe area. - Anthony Street pedestrian crossing request
The Inner West Bicycle Coalition asked Council to investigate a pedestrian crossing at Anthony Street and Edwin Street, Croydon, and officers agreed to look into it.
Could improve crossing safety in a street residents say is used as a rat run. - Balmain bicycle-exemption signage review
A request was made to review ‘One Way Bicycles Excepted’ signs on John Street, Colgate Street and Little Darling Street, Balmain.
May affect cycling access and local one-way traffic arrangements. - Ramsay Street sightline complaint
Council was asked to investigate an advertisement feather flag in Ramsay Street, Haberfield, because it blocks pedestrian sightlines.
Could result in removal of signage that affects visibility at a local intersection.
Impacts
- More streets may get slower speed limits, traffic calming and raised crossings, which should improve pedestrian safety but may alter driving routes.
- Parking supply and parking rules may change in areas including Petersham, Stanmore, Balmain, Tempe and Marrickville.
- Cyclists may gain legal two-way access on some one-way streets.
- Residents near Tempe, South Ashfield and Marrickville may see further reviews of rat-running and access issues.
- Local businesses may be affected by new car share spaces, angle parking investigations and parking restriction changes.
