Burwood backs heritage planning proposal for The Strand, Croydon
A proposal to add a group heritage listing for 1 to 50 The Strand has been endorsed for submission to the NSW planning department, with public exhibition and a hearing to follow if it clears the next stage.
Burwood Council has endorsed a planning proposal to add a group heritage listing for 1 to 50 The Strand, Croydon, sending it to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure for a Gateway Determination.
The proposal would amend the Burwood Local Environmental Plan 2012. The decision was recorded at Burwood Council's 24 March meeting, where councillors approved submission of the proposal to the state department for the next stage of the planning process.
The matter affects owners, businesses and residents on The Strand, where any future heritage controls would apply if the proposal is ultimately adopted. The minutes do not say that the listing has taken effect yet, only that the proposal has been endorsed for submission.
If the department issues a Gateway Determination, the proposal must go on public exhibition for at least 28 days. The minutes say that process would include community consultation and a public hearing before the results are reported back to council.
The meeting minutes also show Mayor John Faker declared a pecuniary interest in the item because his family owns a shop at 22 The Strand, Croydon. He left the meeting for the discussion and decision on the proposal.
The heritage item was one of two planning matters dealt with after council reordered business to the end of the meeting. On the same night, councillors also noted the NSW Government's Burwood North Metro Precinct rezoning exhibition and agreed to prepare a technical submission on infrastructure and funding issues.
