Burwood night precinct plan backs later trading with new sound controls
The Local Planning Panel has unanimously endorsed a Special Entertainment Precinct for Burwood Town Centre, supporting extended trading while adding controls for sound, operating hours and compliance.
Businesses in Burwood Town Centre have won panel backing for a Special Entertainment Precinct that would support extended trading and entertainment uses, while nearby residents would be covered by strengthened sound, operating-hours and compliance controls.
The Burwood Local Planning Panel unanimously endorsed the post-exhibition proposal to amend the Burwood Local Environmental Plan 2012. It also endorsed an updated Burwood Special Entertainment Precinct Management Plan and proposed amendments to the Burwood Development Control Plan.
The proposal covers Burwood Town Centre and is designed to support the night-time economy, cultural activity and entertainment uses. It would provide a planning framework for extended trading and address potential impacts on nearby residential amenity.
The panel considered submissions from the public exhibition and extended consultation with government agencies. It found the amended proposal provided an appropriate framework for economic, cultural and night-time activity while managing impacts on surrounding homes.
The proposal now goes to Burwood Council for consideration and, if endorsed, finalisation in accordance with the Gateway Determination and relevant statutory requirements. It has not yet been finalised.
The precinct plan was one of four planning matters considered by the panel on 15 October. The panel also unanimously supported a group heritage listing for Nos. 1 - 50 The Strand, Croydon.
At Lot 1 Burwood Park, Burwood Road, the panel approved a modification allowing a café to operate as a café/restaurant from 7am to midnight, Monday to Sunday. On-premises liquor service remains subject to separate approval or licensing requirements.
The panel also unanimously approved a detached single-storey secondary dwelling, deck, landscaping, drainage works and removal of one exotic Frangipani tree at 38 Roberts Street, Strathfield, subject to conditions. Ten objections had been received, and Council’s compliance unit was separately asked to investigate a garage structure outside that application.
